Fargo Trading

Basmati, borrie (turmeric), curry leaves, fresh & dry coriander, cinnamon, coconut milk, dried shitake. Underneath and not visible: moong dal, large green lentils, black-eye beans, cous cous, whole jeera (cumin), chana flour. Not only can money buy happiness, but happiness is cheap. Around R300 for this lot (yup kids, that's less than US$45). These days Fargo Trading even have bar-code scanners and take credit cards.

It's not even far off the beaten track - corner Lower Main Road Observatory and Albert Road. Accessible even for the Constantia crowd now that the superhipstertrendoid Biscuit Mill means that Salt River Circle sees more Prados than taxis on a Saturday morning.

Long may it stay exactly the same. I share this secret with some concern. Please do not tell anyone not worthy of it's simple pleasures.

My Favorite Things - Rodgers And Hammerstein
Raindrops on roses and whiskers on kittens
Bright copper kettles and warm woolen mittens
Brown paper packages tied up with strings
These are a few of my favorite things

Cream colored ponies and crisp apple strudels
Door bells and sleigh bells and schnitzel with noodles
Wild geese that fly with the moon on their wings
These are a few of my favorite things

Girls in white dresses with blue satin sashes
Snowflakes that stay on my nose and eyelashes
Silver white winters that melt into Springs
These are a few of my favorite things

When the dog bites
When the bee stings
When I'm feeling sad
I simply remember my favorite things
And then I don't feel so bad.

  1. I love Fargo. Big chunks of pink Himalayan rock salt. Black rice noodles. Fat cardamom pods. Tamarind paste...

  4. Hi Nanette, not as far as I know. You sometimes get it at the organic veg stalls at markets. If you're desperate and willing to collect from Noordhoek I could spare some. Use my contact page to email me if so.
